Developing Primary Medical Practices in Hull
In 2009 Acton Shapiro was commissioned by NHS Hull to provide consultancy support to its GP practices. Our work aimed to build on the “Balanced Scorecard” approach, which had previously been used to help GP practices to identify their strengths and weaknesses.
The work involved three key elements:
- A number of structured interviews with PCT staff and GP practice staff to find out their views on the best way to improve the quality of GP services. The results of this qualitative review were then written up as a report for approval by the PCT senior management team.
- An analysis of data currently available from the PCT’s “Balanced Scorecard” and other sources, such as the Joint Service Needs Assessment.
- Development of an Operating Statement, which includes a set of core standards which the PCT would expect all practices to achieve. This, in turn, forms an important part of ensuring that the PCT can meet the relevant competencies in the World-Class Commissioning framework.
Running in parallel with this has been some individual practice support, including in-depth turnaround work for one practice which had particular difficulties. This work has involved holding a number of practice away days, facilitating SWOT and PEST analyses, together with using psychometric tools to help practices better understand how their teams work and how they can improve their productivity and effectiveness. |
